Lipedema Symposium
Recognizing Lipedema in Obesity Clinics and Research Studies
Lipedema is a painful adipose disorder, predominantly affecting women. Though the prevalence is poorly understood, it is not considered a rare disorder and may be a frequent reason for patients to seek weight management treatment. It presents as a bilateral accumulation of mass especially on the lower limbs, Though it is often mistaken for obesity, it is a clinically distinct entity that is often resistant to first line weight management approaches such as dietary and exercise intervention. Emerging evidence suggests that the metabolic and immune profiles of lipedema patients may differ from obesity. Saturday, October 14, 1:30 pm – 4:45 pm, first come, first served.
Gerontological Obesity Symposium
The KAER Framework to Break Barriers of Obesity Care for Older Adults
Obesity has far-reaching negative impacts, including on physical and mental health, physical functioning, and overall wellbeing. Obesity increases the likelihood of a variety of health problems such as diabetes, heart disease, chronic respiratory disease, kidney disease, and cancers, and it increases morbidity and mortality. Combining these issues with age-related changes in health can lead to serious problems for older adults. As such, comprehensive evaluation of and treatment for obesity for older adults is essential. Using the four-step KAER Framework – kickstart the conversation, assess for overweight/obesity, evaluate treatment options, and refer for community resources – primary care providers and their interdisciplinary colleagues can support older adults to set and achieve goals addressing overweight and obesity.

This effort is being conducted in collaboration with many other societies focused on obesity care. Finally, Dr. Parks will present a Presidential Medal of Distinction to Dr. Barbara Rolls, whose scientific discoveries in the field of satiety and seminal studies on eating behavior in children have significantly impacted the field of ingestive behavior. Dr. Rolls, and three early-career trainees in her lab. will highlight some latest developments and research needs in the field of ingestive behavior.
