UT Southwestern Medical Center (UTSW) Weight Wellness Day

Weight Wellness Day is a free community event  that will be held on Saturday, October 14, 2023 at UT Southwestern Medical Center.

The morning session, intended for all,  features presentations from experts on medications to aid weight loss and appetite suppression; an interactive cooking demonstration showcasing how to make healthy dietary changes while enjoying nourishing, accessible, affordable, and delicious food; and an overview of recent advances in obesity care that are making 2023 a pivotal year.

The afternoon session is designed as an obesity treatment boot camp for healthcare professionals, but all are welcome to attend. There is a nominal fee for physicians who would like to claim continuing medical education (CME) and maintenance of certification (MOC) credits for participating in the session.

Food trucks are available during the lunch break 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm.

Weight Wellness Day is sponsored by the UT Southwestern Nutrition and Obesity Research Center (NORC) and is not formally affiliated with ObesityWeek or The Obesity Society.

Location

The course will take place at UTSW Medial Center, South Campus Building Room D1.600, 5523 Harry Hines Blvd, Dallas, TX 75235, which is a 10-minute drive from the site of ObesityWeek. Park in Lot 7 Visitor Parking.

In this talk, registered dietician Jeff Schellinger will demonstrate how to conduct a motivational dietary intake with patients. The presentation will cover strategies for identifying patients’ dietary goals, barriers to change, and readiness to make changes. Schellinger will discuss the use of motivational interviewing techniques to build rapport with patients and elicit their intrinsic motivation to make healthy dietary changes. This talk will include practical tips for developing personalized dietary plans tailored to individual patients’ needs and preferences.

Weight Loss Surgery Options for Your Patients

This presentation by bariatric surgeon Dr. Melanie Hafford will cover the different surgical options available to assist in weight loss. The presentation will review the benefits, risks, and success rates associated with each type of weight loss surgery, including laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, sleeve gastrectomy, and adjustable gastric banding. Dr. Hafford will discuss the criteria for patient selection, preoperative preparation, and postoperative management.
