Assessing and Treating Older Adults With Obesity Course
Older adults with obesity face distinct challenges that require up-to-date, evidence-informed care. At this in-person course on November 3–4, 2025, in Atlanta, GA, The Obesity Society and the Gerontological Society of America bring together top experts to discuss emerging science and practical strategies. Sessions include Adverse Effects of Weight Loss on Muscle and Bone, Body Composition and Ectopic Fat with Incretins, and Research Gaps in the Care of Older Adults with Obesity. Participants will also explore the GSA KAER Toolkit and clinical exemplars that highlight real-world implementation. This course is designed for professionals ready to lead in advancing care for older adults with obesity.
This course is a joint collaboration between The Obesity Society (TOS) and Gerontological Society of America (GSA).
This course is a ticketed event at the 2025 ObesityWeek conference. All in-person course registrants will also receive on-demand recordings of the course at no additional fee. This course confers up to 6.75 CME credits that count toward ABIM MOC credits. This and all CME events produced by The Obesity Society count towards Group One credit when applying for the American Board of Obesity Medicine exam. The Obesity Society is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

John A. Batsis, MD, FACP, FTOS, AGSF, FGSA, is an Associate Professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the Division of Geriatric Medicine and the Department of Nutrition. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Geriatrics, and Obesity Medicine. Dr. Batsis earned his undergraduate degree from McGill University and his Medical Degree from Trinity College, Dublin, in 2002. He completed residency and fellowship training at Mayo Clinic. His research examines the links between obesity, sarcopenia, and functional impairment in older adults, with over 200 publications. Funded by the National Institute on Health, he focuses on improving wellness for older adults using remote monitoring technologies and mobile health solutions. Dr. Batsis is a Fellow of the Gerontological Society of America, the American Geriatrics Society, and The Obesity Society. He serves on editorial boards for the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society and the Journal of Gerontological Medical Sciences, and is chair-elect of the Clinical Research Section at The Obesity Society.

He has extensive clinical and research experience in examining the impact of lifestyle interventions in reversing frailty in older adults with obesity. His clinical and translational laboratories involve hormonal, nutritional, and behavioral/lifestyle interventions to retard or reverse the metabolic and physical complications of aging, including sarcopenic obesity and type 2 diabetes. He is dedicated to research designed to inform practice guidelines with respect to optimal treatment strategies for obesity in older adults.

Beavers, PhD, MPH, RD, is a Professor of Internal Medicine, Section on Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine and an Associate Director of the Sticht Center for Healthy Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Dr. Beavers’ academic and professional interests lie in the study of nutrition and exercise as interdisciplinary sciences, specifically as they relate to prevention and etiology of chronic disease and disability. She has been continuously funded by the NIH for the past decade and has developed a strong research program focused on mitigating loss of bone mass and strength in persons undergoing intentional weight loss. Dr. Beavers sincerely enjoys the art of team building and leveraging her position/resources to develop projects and people that make meaningful contributions to science.
